Week 7: (Part 2) Weekend News!

Weekend News is a favorite time for many of the students. On the Mondays after a weekend, the students write their own newspaper article about the weekend. We call it, weekend news. Students watch as my CT models how to write the date, 2-4 sentences about what she did and a picture(s) to go along with it. For the students that want to share a lot about their weekend, this is an opportunity for them to write it all down and feel that what they shared was validated. We can't get to everything every student wants to say during Morning Meeting!

Students are building their own newspapers throughout the entire year and can have it as a keepsake once their 1st grade year is over. Doing this is not only teaching them a form of media but they can practice their handwriting, spelling words etc. There is a lot of lessons packed into this simple exercise! The students just think they're having fun...little do they know 😉

You might notice that the second picture doesn't have the word "Date" written in there. The word, "Name" is on it but the students are told to cross that out and write "Date" above it. This particular student didn't do that. Also, if you're curious what the student wrote, "I was sick this weekend because I just was and I don't know why. I am feeling better. I am happy."

"I went to the water park and I went on the water slide."
