Week 2: Classroom Management and Getting Sick

Somehow, two weeks in the classroom have flown by! Not really sure where they went or how I got here, but I did. Wow, it is a whirlwind of activity when you're with 1st graders. I am doing my field experience at Liberty Elementary in my hometown, Big Lake.

I have somehow managed to understand the draw some teachers have to teaching primary grades and also that I am most definitely not immune to little kid germs. I got slammed with a HORRIBLE case of the stomach flu this week and have been out of commission for almost four days. Literally. I haven't moved from my bed.

But, other than my sick experience, I have been having a great time! I wanted to touch on how my teacher uses classroom management effectively with technology. The biggest one I've noticed was the "Clean Up" video song that is played on the Smart Board to indicate the end of the students' morning chores and that they should begin to gather on the carpet for Morning Meeting. My CT hardly has to say anything other than press play and all the kids rush about to finish their morning chores while singing the "Clean Up" song. They love it! All 3 minutes of it get played and I can see why because even then it takes 1st graders a while to get going. Don't tell me you won't have this stuck in your head after you're done listening to it...Click here to watch it; you know you want to!

An example of their morning chores would be to go "book shopping" in the classroom library for new books to read during literacy time later that morning.

I feel the last two weeks have been successful and I look forward to the future weeks and what they bring. Just no more future weeks where I'm sick, please and thank you.

  1. Amber, I am so sorry to hear you got hit with the stomach flu! I'm cautiously awaiting for sickness to hit me as I know it's going to happen at one point. I love hearing that your 1st grade classroom uses smart boards. I am in a 3rd grade classroom and they also use smart boards. Interesting to hear how with just the push of a button to play a song that the whole classroom is transformed. I look forward to hearing more about how technology is used!
