Week 6: iPads + Math
I haven't talked much about how my students learn math in this class but I would like to focus this blog post about some technology they use in the process. As 1st graders, it is very important that they have technology modeled for them properly. If you want to have a piece of technology be used in an educational way, you should introduce it to them as such and not as a toy. Often, you can see children playing on iPads and not really accomplishing much but than you can see children studiously working and using it as a tool to help further their education. 1st graders are completely capable of doing this, but on a different level than that of a 2nd or 3 rd grader.
My CT uses iPads to help the kids learn their math facts. She doesn't have many iPads for her entire class but much like the rounds the children complete (see last blog post), the iPads are used the same way. Only a certain few are allowed to be on them at a time. It works out perfectly! They learn to share this way.
As you can see, there aren't that many iPads. In my own opinion, this is plenty enough for a 1st grade classroom. You can have many different options other than iPads (like a round) and kids will still be content.
I'll post a couple of pictures of the amount of Math apps each iPad has and an example of what one looks like when you open it up. I wasn't able to actually start a game on one because I ran out of time. Sorry!

I had to color over some of the students' names, that is what the
two middle blue lines are for!

Love to see iPads used in the classroom! My 3rd graders also use iPads during math rotations and it works wonderfully. Children at such a young age are becoming so tech savvy and if we can use technology in an academic way, I love to see it done. Students also love games, so what's better than a game and technology while learning all in one? A really popular math game used in the classroom I am in is called abcya. The kids love it. Great post!
